Melbourne Fashion Week 2025

Melbourne Fashion Week 2025

2025 was a special Melbourne Fashion Week for Austage, marking 20 years of working on the event with the incredible City of Melbourne team. Here are some of the highlights!

Student Collections Runway – Younghusband

An always popular fixture on the Melbourne Fashion Week calendar, the Student Collections Runway is a platform for emerging designers to debut their graduate collections and make a statement on an industry stage.

This year the event transformed former woolstore, Younghusband from blank canvas into an immersive, technically ambitious runway, blurring the lines between front of house and back of house with glimpses production aspects that usually remain invisible to the audience.

The show featured live catwalk and backstage visuals wrapped around a purpose-built 12m × 12m cube in the centre of the venue, which also served as the model’s backstage area and entry point onto the runway.

We deployed 10 projectors mapped across 100+ metres of projection surface, with signal distribution managed via a Barco E2 and S3. The action was captured with two manned cameras and three remote cameras, switched live through a Blackmagic 4ME Production Switcher.

Audio was delivered through an Outline CX speaker system, complemented by L-Acoustics X8s and KS21 subs, creating an atmospheric soundscape to complement the live runway experience. The showcaller’s cues were also incorporated into the audio mix to give the audience a unique real-time insight into the mechanics of a live runway show.

Closing Runway – 101 Collins Street

The Melbourne Fashion Week Closing Runway event is always an opportunity to turn up the glam factor to eleven and the 2025 edition was no exception!

Set within the opulent marble foyer of 101 Collins Street, this M/FW runway transformed a corporate landmark into a striking fashion stage with live performances from Odette and Vivid Strings.

Spanning over 200 metres of catwalk, the show demanded precise technical coordination to ensure attendees in all areas of the large venue had an unforgettable experience.

A fully wireless, distributed JBL PA system supported the live performers and was managed across two dedicated audio control positions due to the unconventional nature of the event space.

Vision included four 2m × 1m LED screens, two 12K Panasonic laser projectors, three remote cameras and two manned cameras to maintain dynamic coverage throughout the expansive space.

Austage Events & Melbourne Fashion Week – Celebrating 20 Years of Audio Visual Excellence

Austage Events & Melbourne Fashion Week – Celebrating 20 Years of Audio Visual Excellence

This article was originally featured in the December 2025 edition of CX Magazine.

For two decades, Austage Events has been the quiet force behind the glamour of Melbourne Fashion Week, delivering the audio visual production, management and technical direction that helps transform creative concepts into unforgettable runway moments.

2025 marked Austage’s 20th year working with the City of Melbourne to deliver Melbourne Fashion Week and they take some time to reflect on their evolution from AV supplier to trusted collaborator and the incredible team efforts that have helped shape the city’s most stylish week of year.

Where It All Began

When Austage Events launched its Melbourne office in 2005, Rod Marrison, Matt Wilson and Nick Ellul played key roles in establishing a local presence. The trio have grown with the company from founding members to their current roles as General Manager – Austage Events, Senior Production Manager and General Manager – Austage Venues, respectively.

Austage’s involvement with Melbourne Fashion Week also began in that same year, initially supplying the audio visual requirements to Arts Events, the production company overseeing the week.

Matt started at Austage as a technician and now serves as the Project Lead for M/FW, working closely with the City of Melbourne event producers and production partners such as Resolution X.

“When the City of Melbourne brought things in-house, we were lucky enough to win the tender,” he says. “That relationship has continued ever since.”

In the early years, the event was staged entirely within the Melbourne Town Hall, a visually magnificent but technically challenging venue.

“It’s heritage-listed, with timber beams and no official weight rating in the roof,” recalls Rod. “Every year we’d have to get it re-engineered almost and the sets were massive.”

Yet the complexity became an advantage and those challenges built Austage’s reputation as a valued production partner.

“We got really good at working in the Town Hall,” says Matt. “We knew how to manage the AV requirements to budget and work within the rigging limitations to deliver a high-end show. That set us ahead of other companies.”

The Power of Partnership

Twenty years on, the longevity of Austage’s partnership with the City of Melbourne is much more than technical know-how, it’s a case study in how solid relationships underpin event success.

Their involvement extends beyond lighting and sound, encompassing everything from logistics and seating layouts to technical problem-solving. With a wealth of fashion experience, Austage also brings the power of foresight, pre-empting technical or logistical issues and reading between the lines to ensure the creative vision and budget work in harmony.

“We’re a crucial piece of the puzzle,” says Matt. “The City of Melbourne producers lean on us when it comes to venues because we do 200 other gigs a year and have that industry knowledge around the spaces and how it comes together in terms of technical design.”

The strong foundation of trust built over the years allows both sides to navigate challenges with openness and mutual respect. Rod and Matt emphasise that Austage’s positive approach and the ability to stay flexible have helped cement their affable client relationship.

Rod highlights that empathy and understanding are key. “It’s important to be project-focused and receptive to what the client is trying to achieve and provide the best you can within the scope.”

“It’s about being able to roll with the punches,” adds Matt. “Just being friendly, being helpful. Like in life, being a good human being gets you a long way.”

Part of that collaborative process is having Austage involved in planning from the very beginning. Matt and fellow Senior Production Manager, Mike Rankin (who oversees technical direction and pre-visualisation) attend site visits and contribute to discussions around venue selection and seating layouts.

“Originally we were brought in quite late in the game, whereas now it’s almost a year-round project,” says Matt.

He notes having technical production engaged from the outset helps prevent common pitfalls later on, such as equipment not fitting, insufficient power supply, or access limitations during setup. Refined over the years, it has created an efficient process when it comes to designing spaces for a runway show.

“Now it starts with okay, we want to try and achieve 750 seats in this venue and Mike can plot that out and allow for the zones,” explains Matt.

“We might not know the creative yet, but we know we’ll have lighting, audio, and video. Mike evenly distributes all that, then places the seating around it so everything works cohesively before the design even goes out. The creative might change later, but the groundwork is already there.”

Adapting Through Change

Few moments tested the events industry more than the pandemic, yet it also marked a turning point for M/FW’s creative evolution.

“The City of Melbourne was one of our most supportive clients during covid” recalls Rod. “They were determined to keep things going and it kept hundreds of people working at a time when there was very little happening in the industry.”

In 2020, M/FW was staged as a pre-recorded event with Austage transforming Meat Market in North Melbourne into a three-studio set where fashion parades were filmed and then premiered online at key times over the week. The pandemic years also inspired long-term shifts for M/FW including a new format across multiple venues to showcase Melbourne landmarks and a focus on immersive runway experiences that tell a story.

While some AV companies were heavily investing in their virtual event capabilities during this time, Rod and Matt note they were strategic about new equipment purchases and that futureproofing was a key consideration.

“We built a streaming computer during covid,” recalls Matt. “But the idea was it could always be used as a high end video playback machine once live events came back.”

Evolving Technology, Evolving Shows

From the beta cam decks and DVD players of the early years to LED, simplified cabling and battery-powered lighting rigs, it’s not just the venues that have changed over the past 20 years but the event technology too.

“The mid 2010 years in the Town Hall, it was all complex multiblend projection and big sets,” Rod says. “That was before the E2 vision mixers, so you’d have blends going here, blends going there with multiple systems and operators working to make one cohesive design.

“What we used to do as small or rear-projected screens can now be an 85 or 100 inch TV.”

“Video and audio playback have definitely become easier too,” Matt adds. ”Some content would be 4:3, some would be 16:9 so you’d have all these DVD players. Switching was clunky, you’d always have to switch through black.”

While from a technical perspective there has been a shift toward creating ambiance with AV rather than a spectacle, the move to multiple venues adds its own layer of logistical complexity. From cactus gardens to basement carparks, the embrace of unconventional spaces has kept the Austage team on its toes.

When it comes to a show that really sums up Austage’s capabilities, both Rod and Matt call back to the Little Bourke Street Runway which made a return to the program in 2024 after a seven year break and was also part of M/FW 2025. Unique and quintessentially Melbourne, the show literally stops traffic with the runway staged right on the road.

With a very tight bump-in time, trucks rolling into a one way street and pedestrians to navigate, Rod describes the show as one that requires “military precision”.

“It just gives you a sense of accomplishment with the sheer timeframe. You’re there at 2pm, done by 10pm, this whole massive show has been and gone.”

Matt adds, “those complex projects really define the one team, one dream aspect.”

“I think that’s really our wheelhouse, how we find a way to make it work. To make a big, weird space look cool…yeah, that’s what we do.”

Rod & Matt’s Top Five M/FW Moments

Arid Garden Runway 2020
An outdoor runway at the Royal Botanical Gardens, this one felt special as it marked a return to in-person events after a long time and a funky backdrop to boot.

Little Bourke Street
Runway 2024
It was fun to bring this one back to celebrate 30 years of M/FW. It’s a serious hustle but the end result is amazing and a chance for the general public to catch some of the runway action.

Volvo Electric Runway
Featuring 30 Volvo EX30s parked along the runway, we created a bespoke vision mix streamed onto the car’s centre console screen so audience members in the cars could catch all the action from the front seat.

Town Hall 2013
There was a cut out in the set with the DJs in the back. That was pretty cool!

Student Collections

Staged in the former woolstore Younghusband, we designed a 10 projector blend onto a 12x12m cube to showcase the live runway visuals and back of house action.

Looking Ahead

As Melbourne Fashion Week continues to evolve, so does Austage’s role in shaping its success with a focus on staying adaptable and forward-thinking. The team treats every show as an opportunity to learn while also drawing on their twenty years of experience in executing runway shows.

“Fashion Week is one of those events that pushes everyone to be at their best,” says Rod.

“It’s a challenge, getting out and about into different spaces but everyone mucks in and ultimately has a good time. It’s a great team exercise that builds camaraderie.”

Matt credits Austage’s success to the strength of its people and tight-knit culture. “A lot of the core crew and even some freelancers have been with us since the start. Clients know us, trust us, and enjoy working with us and that makes all the difference.”

Equitana 2024

Equitana 2024

Austage Events was engaged by Potplant Productions to deliver a complete audio visual solution for the 2024 edition of Equitana – a four-day equine event and expo held at the Melbourne Showgrounds.

Spanning multiple pavilions, demonstration zones, and theatrettes, the event brought together equestrian sport, education, and lifestyle in one of the largest gatherings of its kind in Australia.

Austage’s scope of work included full audio and video production for the Grand Pavilion arena, where a custom built four-way LED cube display served as the centrepiece.

Made up of four 4.5×2.5m LED screens, the ‘jumbotron’ style cube ensured clear, high-impact visuals from every angle for spectators. Our team also managed audio and video playback for the Grand Pavilion arena’s schedule of key competition and entertainment events.

Additional AV support was provided for seven expo and demo areas, with Austage supplying audio and video control, roving camera operators, projection screens, LCD displays and wireless mics to facilitate smooth presentations and enhance the live experience for audience members.

A big thank you to Pot Plant Productions for having us onboard for this incredible event and to our friends at Above and Beyond Production Services for their lighting and rigging expertise to help bring the full Equitana experience to life.

It’s not very often you can say you’ve worked on the same event for 19 years!

Ever since the inception of Austage Events Melbourne way back in 2005, we’ve had the pleasure of working on Melbourne Fashion Week. Fashion events are such a core part of what we do at Austage and we couldn’t be more proud of this long-standing partnership with the City of Melbourne.

In 2024, the event saw us working across a host of iconic Melbourne venues and event sites including the Melbourne Town Hall, Melbourne Museum, Queen Vic Market and Little Bourke Street to oversee technical direction and production management across seven jam-packed days.

Here are some of the highlights from the 30th edition of M/FW.

Volvo Electric Runway – Queen Vic Market

One of our favourite things about working on M/FW is the opportunity to turn the unexpected into something spectacular. From carparks to cactus gardens, there have been some fun briefs over the years and our role as technical production experts is to ensure all the audio visual elements tie together seamlessly for a memorable audience experience.

The Volvo Electric Runway saw the sheds of Queen Vic Market transformed into the ultimate runway experience to showcase cutting-edge designs from established and next-gen designers. Given the significant length of the event space, we chose a distributed audio system run lengthways across either side of the runway to give all audience members clear sound regardless of where they were seated.

The IMAG vision solution consisted of 4.5×2.5m LED screens bookending the space with additional TV screens dotted at regular intervals along the runway so attendees had a clear view of the models from multiple angles.

In a unique addition to the show, 30 Volvo EX30s were parked along the runway and utilising a bespoke vision mix we were able to broadcast the action right onto the centre displays so event-goers could enjoy a front row experience from the comfort of the car.

Little Bourke Street Runway

Returning to the program for the first time since 2017, the Little Bourke Street Runway presented by Emporium Melbourne was a fitting throwback to celebrate 30 years of M/FW.

Setting up an event in an open, public space presents a unique set of logistical challenges (especially with a tight schedule) but with the right planning and an expert crew, anything is possible!

With only four hours to turn the stretch of Little Bourke St between Flinders and Elizabeth Streets into a runway, our team got to work like a well-oiled machine setting up a distributed PA and TV screens along the 50m runway.

Thankfully technology has evolved significantly since 2017, so this year’s production included more battery fixtures and a lot less cable management. In fact our friends at Res X only used five cables across the entire lighting rig!

Closing Showcase

To celebrate 30 incredible years, Melbourne Fashion Week 2024 came to a close with a Grand Finale in the place where it all began – the Melbourne Town Hall.

Guests assembled in the round with an iconic lineup of designers who have helped shape Melbourne plus a special performance from G Flip.

The existing AV infrastructure at the Town Hall was complemented by additional rear projection and TV screens placed at key points around the event space + additional lighting and an epic disco ball from Res X to add an extra touch of drama to the already grand hall.

It’s not every day you have the opportunity to manage the technical production for a world-class entertainer. As the in-house audio visual partner at Fed Square, we’ve come to know the iconic venue very well and were thrilled to be trusted to deliver the audio visual requirements when Robbie Williams came to town for a surprise pop up show.

With 12,000 fans flocking to Fed Square and the overflow site at Birrarung Marr to celebrate the release of Robbie’s biopic film Better Man (shot right here in Melbourne), it was certainly an afternoon to remember and an event we’re very honoured to say we could be a part of.

The Brief:

For a world-class entertainer like Robbie Williams, pristine audio quality is imperative. With his appearance comprising of a 40 minute set + Q&A session, Robbie’s team were adamant that everyone in the audience (even those right up the back!) could hear with total clarity.

Our key objective was to make sure the Fed Square appearance matched the impact of any other Robbie Williams concert (no pressure 😁). This required a high-level specification of equipment befitting of an international superstar, while also working within the limits of Fed Square’s existing infrastructure and building surrounds.

The Challenge:

As a heritage listed site, there were a few obstacles to keep us on our toes in pre-production.

The Square itself is an uphill tunnel surrounded by glass buildings which creates a rather challenging acoustical environment in front of the stage, while the right FOH audience area slopes in an upwards direction on one half and down on the other half towards Flinders Street.

With the event only announced to the public 24 hours prior, the anticipated crowd was also an unknown but given Robbie’s star-quality, we planned accordingly and designed the audio system for a full capacity crowd.

How We Made it Happen:

With a large site footprint to cover – including all available viewing areas of the Square and a delay screen at Birrarung Marr – a large format PA (that would be our usual choice for an audience of this size) was not going to work due to the limiting acoustic and physical environmental factors. In liaison with Robbie Williams’ production team and our FOH operator James (Oysters) Kilpatrick, we made the decision to go with a more distributed PA system approach.

An L-Acoustics A15 system was used for the nearfield of the main stage (covering about 45m in all directions) with L/R main hangs, L./R outfill and A10 front fills. These were complemented with 9 double 18″ subs in a sub array configuration for maximum pattern control of the bottom end. The house Fohhn system with its beam steering capabilities delivered the next 40m of coverage, keeping the acoustic reflections off the surrounding buildings while the final 20m at the very end of the Square was complemented with two staggered mini towers of L-Acoustics A10s. The system was fully time aligned with L-Acoustics’ P1/M1.

Getting signal to delay stacks up to 100m away, through more than 10,000 people neatly and safely was no easy feat but as usual our resident AVoIP expert Mike was up to the task.

Using Netgear AVline switches, we created an ad-hoc AVB network utilising Fed Square’s existing fibre infrastructure. This solution allowed us to deliver discreet signals to the delay stacks via fibre connections under the Square as well as Dante to the house delay. With almost no cable runs used above ground it was a tidy solution for effective site coverage and OH&S friendly.

But it didn’t stop with audio! Our expert crew also managed the live camera package and lighting for the Main Square stage + our video feeds ensured visitors in all corners of the site and overflow area at Birrarung Marr could soak up the electric atmosphere for this once in a lifetime experience.

We’re very proud of the whole crew’s efforts to help deliver this incredible, history-making show for Fed Square. It’s a true testament to the capabilities of our nimble team who are always ready to embrace a challenge. What a way to kick off 2025 and definitely one for the pool room!

Chemist Warehouse End of Year Party

Chemist Warehouse End of Year Party

After a four year hiatus, the Chemist Warehouse end of year party returned with a bang to Margaret Court Arena in November 2023.

Entrusted by our good friends at Seeker Agency and Solution Entertainment, Austage Events provided the technical direction and production management to deliver this exciting event with a bang.

For one night only, 3000 guests were transported to another world – Planet CW to celebrate and commemorate a brilliant year of achievements for Chemist Warehouse.

With an epic line-up including Tones & I, Delta Goodrem and DJ Horizon our brief was to produce a dynamic live music experience worthy of the impressive performers and large scale concert venue. This was to be a Christmas party like no other!

Drawing upon our trusted network of industry leaders, we put together a team that could deliver each audio visual aspect of the show to the highest standard. The equipment had to be equally up to the task and no compromises were made here, utilising top tier brands such as Digico, D&B, Martin, Clay Paky, and Barco. This combination of experience and quality equipment, under the planning and technical direction of Austage, set up Seeker Agency and Solution Entertainment to deliver a high impact, unforgettable night for Chemist Warehouse

Events of this scale require a highly experienced approach to get each element of production working towards a common goal and deliver a cohesive result. With Austage looking after the bigger picture, each one of our technical suppliers were able to focus on their role and be empowered to perform at their best.

The arena-worthy lighting and pyrotechnics meshed flawlessly with a backdrop of LED pillars and portrait IMAG screens. Resolume media servers were used for content playback and our Barco E2 video processor routed all of the content to its destination and ensured everything was working together as one.

The video and lighting elements were tightly integrated to bring about impactful moments on stage to lift the energy of the crowd and support the stage presence of the top notch performers.

Digital Health Festival 2024

Digital Health Festival 2024

The Digital Health Festival is an annual industry event showcasing the best in technology and innovation for the healthcare sector.  The 2024 edition attracted over 6500 attendees across two days at the Melbourne Convention and Exhibition Centre.

An expo, conference and trade show all in one, the Digital Health Festival is a unique event experience with all attractions situated within the one floor space to create a buzzing, high energy environment for learning and networking.

The Brief

For the third consecutive year, Austage Events was engaged to provide the technical production for the presentation theatres, which required a creative approach due to the distinctive footprint of the event.

With eight theatres integrated directly into the event space, our brief was to design an audio visual solution to ensure attendees could easily see and hear the presentations with a busy expo going on around them. With over 100 presentations scheduled over the two days, technical flexibility was key to making this a success.

The Solution

To achieve this, we placed the presentation theatres back to back in pairs across the four corners of the venue. Each theatre stage included an LED screen with a 2.6mm pixel pitch for displaying presentation content. For open plan events such as this, LED is the perfect choice as the screens are not affected by ambient light.

For audio delivery, our challenge was coming up with an effective system to combat the stages being in close proximity to each other and also the expo area. In four theatres we used PA systems designed for low level saturation which allowed us to keep the level low so it wouldn’t encroach into the surrounding areas but still ensured all attendees could hear clearly.

The four adjoining stages were designed as “silent theatres” using over 1000 sets of headphones so guests could immerse themselves in the presentations and multiple sessions could be held simultaneously across the venue without interruption or distractions.

The Digital Health Festival continues to get bigger and better every year and we’re so proud of the work our team put in to deliver another successful large-scale event. Bring on 2025!
